Make A Wish

One of the dreams that I had about working in television was that I’d get to experience all of the glitter and glamour of Tinseltown.  And I have - I’ve attended a Women in Film Oscar Luncheon, served on a discussion panel with Magic Johnson, met some of my superstar idols, and traveled across this great country – all while doing what I love!  Needless to say, my wish has more than come true.   And I truly didn’t think it could get any better – until I was asked to grant someone else’s wish.

The Make A Wish Foundation contacted me about a beautiful, vibrant, 13 year old girl named Claire.  Claire suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, and her wish is to have me come to her home and re-decorate the bedroom that she and her younger sister share.  She wants a bedroom that reflects who she is: a glamour-puss, ocean loving, Mermaid-dreaming girl.  So I am charged with creating a space that will transport her to the seaside; a place that she doesn’t get to visit due to her illness.

I have to tell you all that this is a HUGE honor for me – easily the biggest of my life. No amount of fancy parties or hobnobbing could even come close to the pleasure of this experience, and it’s shown me the real benefit of being on TV: having the opportunity to share my talent in a way that touches the life of another person – a total stranger – and makes their experience on this planet a little bit more beautiful. That is what is real, the true gift…the rest is just icing.

I’m heading to her house this a.m. to install her room along with a team of fabulous volunteers, so here’s a peek at what Claire’s been working with:

My goal: turn this space into a light, bright, girlie and glamourous seaside cottage – Check back this Thursday to see pictures of Claire in her new bedroom!

Layers

I love framed panels of gorgeous wallpaper. They’re a fresh take on the old standard, plus you achieve pattern, texture, color and de-facto art. (Not to mention cutting the work load in half!) Love.

Inspiration

I’ve got pixie cuts on the brain. Ever since I went back to my short/spiky ‘do, I’ve only wanted to go shorter.  (And let me tell ya’, it’s an addiction that’s tough to fight since I can cut my own hair, and don’t need to get an appointment/pay for upkeep!)

The age-old argument is that ‘men find long hair sexier’. While I’m all for making your man happy (though mine actually thinks my short hair is sexier on me than long), I believe that first you have to please yourself. Short hair says that you’re confident, fuss-free, and unafraid to reveal yourself….and if that’s not sexy, then I don’t know what is.

Here are some great examples of sexy short hair – in my opinion, these women have reaped HUGE benefits from ‘taking it all off’:

Mix it Up.

I appreciate a space that lets my eye bounce around and have a wee adventure, so what better way to accomplish some of that style fun than a zig zag rug? They’re bold and graphic, but can work beautifully with almost any style of decor – plus they add that ‘fresh’ vibe that is so vital to making a space sing. Check it…

Tennessee!

I’m off to TN today to film a special for HGTV, so I won’t be posting until my return next Monday. I’m hoping for some sweet tea and Southern Hospitality…and a portable AC if I can get it!  See you Monday, ya’ll!

I love a good grasscloth wall. LOVE. It’s another one of those materials that yields multiple layers thanks to it’s color, texture and sheen. Take a look at some of my favorites…

When I grow up

…I want to own certain things – pieces of furniture that I totally covet. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I harbor the fantasy that once I own these things, my life will be happy, my home will be complete, and I’ll appear 10lbs thinner. (I know. Such is the irrational power of good design over my state of mind.)  Sigh. Well, even if these things never make their way into my home, I’ll always have the web…..

A candy-colored inlaid chest:

Alinya

Both Graham and Green

Any wall in my home would be lucky to stand behind these chests (and how fab is the charcoal/blue wall behind the lavender with pops of fuscia?! Mental note!). Gorgeous, exotic and ‘Classic with a twist’. Love.

A Barcelona Chair (Toffee or White…can’t decide):

The picture in my head has me lounging on this design classic, stretching my mile-long legs in front of me and smoking a cigarette ala’ Mad Men. (I don’t have mile-long legs, and I don’t smoke…but the fantasy seems so glamorous… in an ignorance-is-bliss kind of way!)

A Moroccan Rug:

Both Attic Mag

I want to live barefoot 24/7, and bury my toes in these rugs at every opportunity. Decadent and luxe.

Room Crush

Table Tonic

Every once and a while, I’m surprised by my reaction to a space.  For instance,  I love this room even though it contains 2 elements that I’d normally shun – the cowhide rug and floral pattern pillows. Testament to the power of the right combo and context, I guess. (Plus, I covet the ethereal artwork!)
